Hola, from All Kreatures!

Usually, I am bringing fun and exciting news to you.  Sadly, this time I am bringing alarming news of the Midwest Canine influenza outbreak which we understand is coming from a new strain out of Asia.  It has already caused several deaths and many illnesses and that is making me think that we need to talk about it.  First of all, we do not need to panic, we just need to know the facts and know what we need to do to stay safe and healthy.

When my people planned and built All Kreatures, they understood that they would need to safe-guard against situations like this.  They put sanitation walls between every kennel enclosure.  The aisles were designed wide to keep dogs from having close contact and the air flow was measured to keep fresh air moving.  This is also why they have always been strict about now allowing pets from different families to play together of interact.  We can't lick or bite each other and have nose-to-nose contact.  We don't share drinking bowls and never have swimming pools or water features.

I heard my people say that the best thing to do if you are feeling bad or showing the following the symptoms is to call your Veterinarian, immediately!

Coughing, Sneezing, Variable fever, Clear nasal discharge that progresses to thick,yellowish-green mucus, Rapid/difficult breathing, Loss of appitite, Lethargy

If your people have any questions at all, they should call your Veterinarian and ask about any of your planned activities such as going to dog parks.  Please don't panic, but stay healthy!

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

The birds are singing, the buds are blooming and the grass is growing and growing!  Spring has sprung at All Kreatures.  We have finished some outdoor chores and are looking forward to summer and all that it brings ... except fleas and ticks!

I just want to remind you that it is time to see your Veterinarian who is the only person that can give you the right information about what to do about those nasty pests.  You can buy hundreds of  things at the store or online, but only your Veterinarian can tell you what is safe and what is really going to work.

Also, tell your people to be very careful about what they use around the house and in the yard and garden.  Please tell them to talk to the Veterinarian before using chemicals.

We are looking forward to seeing you for boarding and grooming during the spring and summer.  Kristen and Dee are doing haircuts and de-sheds seven days a week to keep us everyone wanting to get in shape.

Well, time for me to go.  We have lots to do to prepare for the fun ahead ... come for a daycare and join the fun.

Adios,

Paco P.

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

We just had the best Spring Break ever!  We enjoyed so many old dog and cat friends along with the new friends that we are happy to welcome to the All Kreatures family.  We are thankful for each and every pet parent, dog and cat (plus one guinea pig) who came to see us.  We loved having you and it makes us so happy that we are continuing to please you!

Now, for the gossip!  The Groom Shop is buzzing.  We have two new Groomers!  Let me tell you about Dee and Kristen.  Dee has been grooming for over 30 years.  Just think about all that experience.  It really shows!  Kristen comes from New York City!  Actually, Long Island and shows Black Russian Terriers.  She owned her own Groom Shop in New York.  Both ladies are WHIZ groomers and we are thrilled to have them on the All Kreatures Team.

Well, I'm off to help get everything back in good order after everyone checked out yesterday.  Got to get ready for Easter!

Adios for now,

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

Crazy place this has been for the past two weeks.  Snow days turned into two weeks, so just for fun we decided to do a Facebook Contest.  Wow, how much fun was that!

The deal was, you send us a photo of your pet playing in the snow.  The winner would receive a free, 2-night boarding stay at All Kreatures.  We had so many wonderful snow dog photos sent to us that we couldn't make up our minds!  We finally decided to award three winners for boarding stays.  Also, Wells destroyed his brand new groom rolling in the snow, so we thought it would be a good thing to give him his next groom free!

I think we should have another Theme Contest real soon!  Does anyone have any ideas?

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

Wow, this has been an exciting week.  It started out with our whole family camping out here Monday night so that we could be sure that everyone was safe and warm during the ice storm. We felt really lucky when all that happened was that we lost the phone system for just a little while.

So many folks around Knoxville and out in the counties have had no power for a couple of days now.  We are taking pets while families are going to hotels until their power comes back on.  Jeff says that it reminds him of years ago when a train derailed and there was a huge toxic spill and we took a bunch of pets for people on an emergency basis.  I am so glad that we can help.  You never know what might happen and this is a very good reason to always have your vaccination information handy.

Well, I need to go.  We have lots of new guests and I want to help them feel at home.  They sure seem happy to have a nice warm bed.

Adios for now,

Paco P.

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

I don't know if you've ever asked about our Doggy Day Care or if your pet could play with other pets while boarding here, but I hear the staff answering that question all of the time.  This is the answer they give, so I'm going to pass it along to you.

We have never allowed pets from different families to play together.  My people,  have bred and shown Siberian Huskies for many years.  I am told that Siberians work well in packs, but on a given day they can have issues that cause them not to play well together even if they have lived together all of their lives. This is the main reason that they have never wanted to take this responsibility with other people's pets.

Also, dogs tend to slobber.  Slobber contains bacteria, YUCK!  I don't think that I need to say anymore about that.  This is why we clean all of our toys after each playtime or we only play with your toys!  No swapping slobber here!

So, it remains that here at All Kreatures, all Activities are individualized with your pet.  We feel strongly that it is not responsible to allow pets from different families to play together.

Adios,

Paco P.

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

Have I ever told you the story about Sam, our bird?  Well, he (or she - never was sex tested) is a beautiful yellow-naped amazon parrot who came to live with us on a permanent basis about five years ago.  Sam will be forty-five years old this year, the same as someone else who we will not mention, which is middle-aged according to his life expectancy.

Sam had been boarding with us for many years while his previous owners had a very interesting post-retirement occupation as relief lighthouse keepers.  We had grown very fond of Sam and they decided to allow us to adopt him when they decided that they needed to give him up.

Sam resides in a sunny window in Betty's office close to the kitchen.  He used to stay in the reception area, but the noise sets him off...oh boy!  He loves living in a pet boarding facility, but his opinion is not always needed.  So, we enjoy him in the back office and while we eat lunch.  He can talk, saying some names, a few short phrases and memicking everyday noises.

Sam is a big part of the All Kreatures Team.  I hope you enjoyed reading his story!

Hola from All Kreatures Pet Care

Everyday, I sit at the gate and watch while the pets come and go.  I write about it all the time.  Today I looked over at the Kitty Kottage and saw a content cat lounging on the cat tree and it occurred to me that I never write about the cats who board with us.  So, I decided to write my blog about cat boarding here at All Kreatures.  I thought you might be interested to know what I think is the secret to our success with cat boarding.

Cats make great guests.  Fortunately, we do not see many cats who have anxiety issues, but it is common when they travel from home or when they're away from their people.  That is one of the reasons every cat has a bright window view.  Cats love to be entertained and what is better than a front-row-seat on the outdoors.  Our cat trees are a great place for a nap, play, climbing and scratching.  The comforting environment wins over the newbies in short order!

We offer Kitty Kuddles which is a good way to bond and get to know the cats.  Usually, the owner brings treats and toys to entice play and help us make friends.  So as you can see, the cats at All Kreatures are content because they are in a warm and friendly environment designed just for them.

Adios for now,

Paco P.

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

Everyday, we watch the dogs and cats come and go at All Kreatures.  It's so much fun and so entertaining.  We get to hear all the stories about the exciting trips the people are taking.  Some are going to see family and friends.  Some are going to the beach or on a cruise.  Others are just taking a business trip, but travel still sounds like fun to us.

The dogs and cats that will be boarding with us are also on vacation and they should look forward to a good time as well.  Most of the people request Playtime, Nature Walk or Kuddles.  That pleases us, because we know how important it is to keep everybody happy while they are boarding.  We have even figured out why it helps so much.

You would expect that it keeps pets busy and provides exercise, but did you know how important daily exercise is for social skills?  Young dogs and those who lack confidence really need the extra daily attention.  It goes without saying that the old guys expect and deserve it.  Activities are also a great way for our staff to build a positive relationship with the dogs and cats while they are boarding.  We get to know them better and sometimes we even spot problems before they become real issues.  We think the biggest reason of all that Activities are important is that they relieve boredom.  Boredom can sometimes lead to behavioral problems that that can result in a troubled stay.  Anything we can do to avoid a ruined vacation is well worth the effort!

We believe that everyone deserves to have a good time while they are away from home, including the four-legged family member.  These are my thoughts for now.

Adios,

Paco P.

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, so I have been thinking about what to buy for Sophie.  I started looking online to see what was new for 2015.  All I can say is, "WOW."  So much for dogs and cats to choose from, how is a guy to know what to do?

I found a site called, "14 Valentine's Day Gifts."  They offered Specialty Pet Dishes. Not just dishes, aged-copper and vintage-black dishes.  Dishwasher safe, of course.  Also, was the Critter-Zone air purifier that eliminates pet odors up to 400 feet.  What about human odors?  Then the Incognito Pet Carrier.  Since when is Sophie going anywhere, Incognito? There was also the Hot Water Bottle for dogs.  Don't think we need that!  Goat Milk Soap sounds interesting, but I'll definitely need to run that one by Jennifer in the groom shop. Then the best of all, her chance to star in her very own Romance Novel.  Paperbacks, $39.95 and hardcover $79.95.  You can even include photos!  On second thought, I really don't think that I can trust Jeff to help me with this project!

Well, looks like I'll stick with Cookies from River Dog Bakery again this year!  Pam always treats me right!

Adios for now,

Paco P.

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

This is a good time to thank everyone for a great 2014.  We really appreciate our wonderful clients allowing us to to provide boarding, grooming and doggy daycare for your four-legged family members throughout the year.

We hope that you had a joyous Holiday Season and we look forward to seeing you in 2015.

Paco and all of your friends at All Kreatures!

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

Recently, I started to notice that Lola and Sophie were getting a bit "fluffy."  So, I thought we might start a healthy eating program here at All Kreatures.  I started doing my research on healthy eating options for dogs and cats.  Fruits and vegetables are a good way to go if you are trying to take off a few pounds.  Only problem, if you are a dog or cat, I found out that you have to be very careful in your selections!  First, I learned that dogs are omnivorous and that makes us willing to try out different kinds of foods.  Jazzy (the cat) decided to go healthy with us and I found out that she was going to be very picky, because she is carnivorous.  Cats are also not capable of digesting certain types of foods which make things more difficult. Guess that is where that "finicky cat" thing comes from!

Please tell your people to make sure that the food is baked or steamed and cut up into small pieces and given to us in small amounts.  We don't want to run the risk of being choked or overloading on carbs or calories.

Here is a list of healthy treats that we love, followed by a list of foods that you will need to stay away from.  Enjoy!

HEALTHY!  Apples (without seeds, poisonous), Blueberries, Strawberries, Watermelon (without seeds), Frozen Bananas, Green Beans, Carrots (raw or cooked), Sweet Potato (cooked, cubed, mashed - no butter or seasoning), Squash, Zucchini, Lettuce, Spinach, Popcorn (unsalted and unbuttered), Catnip or Cat Grass

STAY AWAY!  Grapes and Raisins (toxic), Garlic and Onions (toxic), Tomatoes, Avocado, Mushrooms (wild are the worst kind), Fruits with pits, Nuts (macadamia extremely toxic)

Adios for now!

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

I can't believe that summer vacation time is over.  We are going to miss seeing the children coming in with the families leaving for vacation.  I am going to miss my summer buddies Cole, Christian, Brad and Will.  They have to go back to school next week.  Wow, how fast the summer months went by!

Now we can get ready for the fall.  Fall has always been a great time of of year here in East Tennessee and especially Knoxville.  We have so many things to look forward to.  Well, if you're a dog like me, maybe not Booms Day.  We don't like fireworks!  But, we do like to cuddle up and watch football or we don't mind a sleep-over at All Kreatures while our people go to the night games or attend the out-of-town rivalries.

Then there are the mountains!  Our mountains in the fall can't be beat.  We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world.  We have so many dog and cat friends who come to stay with us for daycare or check in for boarding while their people go to the mountains.

There is so much to look forward to in the fall that I will soon forget that I am going to miss the fun that we had in the summer.

Adios for now,

Your friend...Paco P.

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

I am so excited to tell you about our new Groomer, Jennifer.  She is doing the greatest haircuts that you can imagine.  She is even doing cats!  We are so happy to have her helping Donna in the Groom Shop.

Jennifer and Donna have been having lots of requests to shave down our furry friends and here is some advice which might interest you!  Everyone wonders if they should give their pet a short haircut so they won't suffer from the heat.  Some folks even want to shave down that beautiful double-coat coat for comfort in the summer.  Jennifer says than it really isn't the length of the coat, but the owner's willingness to devote time to care for the summer haircut.

Even the longest coats act as heat protectors in hot climates.  For instance, our friends, the Siberian Huskies, have those natural protectors that keep heat off in the summer and harsh weather off in the winter (even in their natural arctic environment).  As long as your pet is healthy, the double-coated and heavy-coated dogs will be comfortable all summer provided they are given adequate brush-outs and proper coat maintenance.

The condition of the coat determines whether or not it should be cut.  A matted coat will trap heat and moisture.  This causes irritation, odors and can lead to more serious skin issues.  When hair becomes extremely matted, even a professional groomer won't be able to brush out the mats and a full clip-down will become necessary.

If you decide to clip, please remember that without his coat your pet will need extra protection from the sun, flies and other parasites,  Exposed skin is sensitive to sun and can sunburn leading to several skin disorders including skin cancer.

Jennifer and Donna are excited to help you keep your dog or cat in tip-top summer condition.  Give them a call.  Me, I have what you call a year-round coat, but I love to give a tip or two when I hear something going around the kennel.

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

This is definitely my favorite month of the year, beginning with Cinco de Mayo.  All across the nation Chihuahuas will have their cute little apple-shaped heads topped with tiny sombreros.  Some of us will wear serapes, others will be dressed as matadors, while others will dangle itty-bitty maracas from our collars.

While we are celebrating Cinco de Mayo, I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate my own heritage and tell you a little bit about my breed.

The name Chihuahua comes from the largest of the Mexican states, officially known as Libre y Soberan de Chihuahua.  Aztecs said that Chihuahuas were guides for the dead, carrying human spirits on their backs across the river into the afterlife.

We usually weigh between three and six pounds.  We are the smallest AKC-recognized breed.  This makes us perfect for people who live in apartments.  We have a very long life span, averaging 15 to 20 years.

The most famous Chihuahua in history is of course Gidget, the Taco Bell Chihuahua!  Everybody loved her.  "iYo quiero Taco Bell."

Adios for now.

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

It's your friend Paco here.  I don't know about you, but this crazy weather we're having in Knoxville is making me nutty.  Makes me wonder what the fleas and ticks are up to!  I've always heard that when you hear the birds start to sing, you can bet the fleas and ticks will be showing back up. So, it's time to make sure that you are protected.

If you are going to be boarding with us, you will want to make sure that you have your flea and tick prevention up-to-date.  Your Veterinarian well help you make the right decision about the perfect plan for you.

Now is also a great time to get a good bath or groom for a fresh start on springtime.  The groomers at All Kreatures will be happy to help you look good and feel your best for the beautiful weather ahead.

The forecast is great for Spring Break.  We are looking forward to lots of dog and cat friends next week here at All Kreatures.  I can't wait to see all the old ones and meet the new ones!  Playtimes and Nature Walks will be extra fun in the sunny weather.  Watch for us on Facebook and we will post photos of our dog and cat friends while they are visiting All Kreatures.

Adios for now!

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

Hello again, it's your friend Paco and this month I want to talk about winter skin problems.  I started thinking about this watching my little buddy Lola scratch so I started doing a little research on my own.  I found out that just because the fleas and ticks are not a huge concern other things can start to make us itch as the weather turns cold.

Here in Knoxville, the humidity gets lower and the wind and cold make our people turn up the heat systems in our homes.  As we go in and out during the day our bodies have a hard time adjusting to the moisture changes.  This is very hard on our skin!

Now is an important time to keep us bathed, groomed and our skin moisturized.  Too many baths can cause extra irritation, so it is very important to use a very good moisturizing shampoo for sensitive skin along with a good rinse.  All this available in our groom shop at All Kreatures.

At home our people can use a soft brush on us (and our cat friends) to help stimulate the hair follicles and natural oil glands in our skin.  Removing the dead skin cells and loose hair from the coat will allow the skin a chance to repair itself.  If you are boarding with us, ask your people to have us brush you during your playtime.  We love to do that and it feels so good!

Of course, if you are having major skin problems you need to ask your people to call your Veterinarian for the best advise on how to make you feel better.

Well, I need to go now.  I am going to go to the groom shop and help Lola get a nice refreshing bath with the Hydro Surge and some Tea Tree Shampoo.  I think she is going to feel better real soon.

Adios for now!

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

This is your All Kreatures mascot, Paco P.  I was watching Fox News and saw some really scary stuff about all these beautiful holiday decorations that the people are putting up in our homes.

Almost everything on the tree is dangerous.  Some of the trees have been treated with preservatives, some are flocked with artificial snow, and some have the most dangerous thing of all on them, tinsel!  Trees can cause anything from a deadly electrical shock to a toxic poisoning or gastrointestinal blockage.  So, just stay away from the tree!

Here is something else that I didn't know.  Those pretty snow globes are really very dangerous.  They are filled with glycol which is a chemical used in antifreeze.  We all know how toxic that is!  So, it is a good idea to ask our people to be very careful if they break one these things, or maybe consider not having them around if they have pets.

Here is a list of other things that can be dangerous: Poinsettias, Lit Candles, Baker's Chocolate, Holly Berries and Glass Ornaments.

Have a safe and happy Holiday Season and I will be talking to you again real soon!

Adios for now,

Paco P.

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

Wow...what a great Thanksgiving we had here at All Kreatures!  I met so many new friends and I am so happy that lots of them will be coming back for Christmas.  This really is a wonderful time of the year.

We did a fun thing at Thanksgiving for our Facebook Fans and will be doing it again at Christmas.  It's called "Check-In at Check-In."  If you check-in on Facebook while you're here, we will give you $10 off on your next three night boarding stay.  What a great deal for your people and you get to come back and visit me!

Well, I need to get back to work.  I am busy chasing our Elf on the Shelf around.  His name is Nixi.  He is a strange fellow, but I hear that he keeps Santa updated on everything around here so I need to try to stay out of trouble.

Happy Holidays...and Adios for now!

Paco P.

Hola, from All Kreatures Pet Care

It's your friend and All Kreatures mascot, Paco.  Well the weather sure has changed since we last talked.  A weather change is always a great time to schedule a wellness check with your Veterinarian.  I want all of my friends to stay happy and healthy over the cold winter months!

I overheard them talking about something called Thanksgiving.  Seems that we are going to be getting very busy around here.  So, if you're planning to come visit you need to have your people call my people and make a reservation real soon.  They keep talking about "turkey and dressing."  I sure hope that it isn't people food.  They never let me have people food and it sure does sound good!

Adios until next time!

Paco P.
